IN-PLACE PROCESSING is a road reconstruction method developed by TRIPLE TREE, INC., that utilizes a mobile rock mill and crusher (the IN-PLACE PROCESSOR) to convert the top 6 inches of a rocky, worn out, unmanageable native road surface into a deep, smooth, and very manageable aggregate surface that will give years of performance.

How In-Place Processing Works


In-Place Processing grinds and crushes oversized rock (REGARDLESS OF SIZE) deep below the road suface using a specially designed mobile roto mill and crusher called an In-Place Processor.

When the In-Place Processor is lowered into, and pulled through the road surface, it rips and grinds the oversized rock into smaller pieces and chunks. These semi-reduced materials are brought through the head of the machine, where they are crushed and placed back onto the road surface leaving a thick, aggregate cushion in place of the former boulders and bedrock.

This new cushion is now ready to be reshaped, compacted, and if needed, Deep Stabilized. The composition of the finished product is somewhat dependent upon the native materials present in the road, but, as the adjoining photo shows, it most often resembles imported crushed material.

In-Place Processing was developed with two things in mind:

1: To create a thick, crushed aggregate road surface using only the native materials present in the road surface.

2: To do it economically.

Other types of mobile roadcrushers, currently available, utilize what is commonly referred to as SURFACE PROCESSING technology. These crushers can only process rock, up to 16 inches in size, that is laying loose ON TOP OF THE ROAD SURFACE. In order to accumulate these loose, surface materials; extensive and EXPENSIVE methods of PRE PROCESSING must be employeed.

Utilizing two graders and sometimes a dozer, the road surface and borrow pits must be ripped up to generate the rocky materials needed. These materials are bladed into a windrow of a specific size, with a specific ratio of rock to fines. After the mobile crusher processes the windrow, the material is spread back across the ripped and uneven road surface. Usually, several windrows must be processed to generate enough material to create a cushion 6 inches thick.

Expensive Surface Processing

1.) The IN-PLACE PROCESSOR doesn't cover up road surface problems, but processes deep into the road surface leaving a smooth sub-grade that will eliminate any rocks from reappearing in the near future.

2.) With the IN-PLACE PROCESSOR, the required processing depth is set in the cab and you are always guarenteed the depth you need (down to 6 inches).

3.) The IN-PLACE PROCESSOR does NOT require EXPENSIVE PRE-PROCESSING, sizing of rock materials, or windrows. 

4.) Roads do not need to be closed during IN-PLACE PROCESSING. The Processor levels and smooths out the PROCESSED material as it works allowing traffic to maintain a nearly uninterrupted flow.

5.) IN-PLACE PROCESSING breaths new life into road systems that are beyond normal maintenace help

6.) To date, approximately 50 projects and 500 miles of road in the Western United States, on both public and private lands, have been IN-PLACE PROCESSED.

Production and Cost

In-Place Processing may seem like a miracle, but it doesn't always work on all rock. There is a balance between rock hardness and fracturability. This means that a softer rock that isn't very fracturable may break just as well as a harder rock that exhibits fracturability. The way we test for this balance is by hammering on the rock with a portable jackhammer. If we can break down the edges of the stone with the jackhammer, then we probably will be able to PROCESS it.

Given these variables, the following production figures are considered average for IN-PLACE PROCESSING, watering, finish blading, and compacting a native surface road.
